Creating an aligned food processing strategy
A review of the global and domestic food-processing sector was compiled for a BRICS member country in 2012, to inform policy formation in support of the development and growth of their food-processing industry.
Motivation for greater regional market integration and the alignment of relevant food policies
Based on an assessment of domestic operational and supply chain capabilities, this study identified future growth and market opportunities for domestic industry participants, with the intention of eliminating the current industry trade imbalance and advancing the BRICS member’s food processing objectives, given the identified potential of the industry to facilitate socio-economic multipliers through employment creation, rural integration and export market opportunities.
Value add to the client
The report supported the creation of an aligned food processing strategy, noting that short term projects and regulations are unlikely to have any major impact on the BRICS member’s food value chain unless a clear, value chain-aligned food policy is articulated for the period to 2050.
Results and future plans
The findings from this report have motivated for greater regional market integration and the alignment of relevant food policies, given the development implications for increasing food demand in this BRICS member country and the rest of the continent to 2050.
